Girls only skills courses are designed for women who have some experience of mountain biking but want to progress to the next level and build their confidence without encountering the 'willy waving bravado' sometimes found on male orientated courses.

We meet lots of women who are happy to venture off road but who become uncomfortable when things get steep and technical or their wheels leave the ground. For this, our Girls Only Courses are the perfect antidote. We will teach you the physical skills required to control your bike in any situation and you'll also learn how to think about your riding. When the physical and mental aspects are combined you'll gain the ability to truly ride your bike and not be just a passenger on it ... tightening your grip on the bars, gradually getting further out of control as you go from one near miss to the next.

Skills and techniques covered on Girls Only Courses include:
Body position and bike dynamics ... what effect do you have on the bike and what should you do about it.
Braking ... properly not continually :-)
Confidence at speed ... learn how to alter your perception of speed and ride faster.
Dealing with low and high speed trail obstacles ... how to get over, through and up things.
Cornering techniques ... from a low speed switchback to fast flat corners and everything in-between.
Getting your wheels off the ground ... and back down in one piece.
Drops, steps and jumps ... how to confidently ride the scary parts.

Hi Stuart and Dee

Just a quick note to say many thanks for a fantastic time last weekend. Debs and I were buzzing on the way back and we are both desperate to get out and see if we can apply the new techniques to our regular trails (and show the lads a thing or two of course!).

Many thanks once again for a truely inspirational weekend.

Liz and Debs

Course Dates:
We don't allocate any dates to this course as we aim to be completely flexible. Contact us with your preferred dates.

This course is suitable for both complete beginners to mountain biking and intermediate riders who would like to take their skills further.

We train on our own purpose built skills areas which means no one else will be getting in your way, we don't have to waste valuable training time riding from one section to another ... and we're never too far from the kettle.
Whether you're new to riding and want to learn the basic techniques to get you started or feel that your riding has reached a plateau, this course is ideal for you as we tailor the tuition to suit each individual. The comment we hear most often is, "I'd never have ridden that before the course". This could be two days that change the way you ride forever. We can take a maximum of 6 riders and we offer one to one tuition at no extra cost if preferred, just let us know your requirements.

Subjects covered include:
Bike fit and set up.
Body position and its effect on your riding.
Braking technique and speed control.
Speed and your perception of it.
Trail obstacles at low and high speed.
Drops and jumps.
Cornering, low and high speed.
Line choice and reading the trail.

Hi Stuart,
Dave, Manoj and me went to Whinlatter today to put our new learnt skills in to practice.
I must be getting better as I only fell off twice. On a serious note I'd like to thank you for what you showed us. I didn't think I'd remember it all but I did. I got over things that I wouldn't have gone near this time last year.
cheers
Lee

Courses are run on demand, so you not only get to choose the course content, you also get to decide on the date you want your course. We can cater for groups (2-6) or individuals. One to one basis at no extra charge.

Our one day skills courses have been designed for people looking to improve or advance their riding in particular areas. Many riders find that even after a number of years riding there are still certain skills that elude them or perhaps they're lacking the confidence to ride certain terrain/obstacles.

This course will give you the opportunity to address your own specific problem areas. It might just prove to be the most productive days riding you'll ever have. As an example you might choose to focus on, cornering and drop offs or perhaps line choice, braking technique and speed perception, the choice is yours. However, if the list of skills you want to cover is five or more, we recommend you book a two day course as one day isn't long enough.

Areas you could choose from include:
Correct body position and understanding its effect.
Braking technique and speed control.
Cornering - high speed.
Cornering - low speed.
Trail obstacles at high speed.
Dealing with drops and jumps.
Line choice and reading the trail.
General descending.
Altering your perception (beating the fear).

Hi Stuart,

Went to Coed y Brenin early on Saturday morning and did the MBR trail.
Put my new skills into effect and was much more confident and managed to ride nearly the entire course.

Cheers for your advice, it was really helpful and I was able to use it on the trail, you can't do better than that really!

I reckon me and some mates will be up again next spring so will discuss with them re hopefully booking you for a cross country ride.

Take it easy.

Mark.

Throughout the morning you'll learn the skills required to plan a route, find the hidden trails on your doorstep, relocate when you get lost and gain the confidence to just get out on your bike and explore. During the afternoon you'll get the opportunity to devise a route, compile a route card, work out how long the ride should take and what we might encounter on the way. Then there's only one thing left to do ... put it into practice with a ride into the hills! We'll provide maps, route cards, compass, romer etc on the day.

If you don't know a bottom bracket from a headset then we can help. We're going to be running one day Mountain Bike Maintenance Courses throughout the whole of 2010. All the basics will be covered and a few not so basics too.

We'll look at everything required to enable you to look after your bike whether at home or on the trail. Or even build up your dream bike from a bare frame. Apart from the satisfaction of doing your own maintenance and repairs you'll also save yourself a fair sum of money by not having to take your pride and joy to the bike shop every other week. We understand that not everyone has access to every bike specific tool ever made so we'll explain how to improvise in certain situations. The course is designed to be very much hands on so feel free to bring your own bike. You may as well start as you mean to carry on!

Areas covered include:
Gear adjustment and servicing.
Replacing cables.
Headset overhaul/adjustment.
Disc and V brake servicing.
Wheel truing.
Puncture repairs.
Understanding suspension.

The term, All Mountain Rider can mean many things to many people. We like to think that an All Mountain Rider is someone who has the skills to safely ride in any environment. Our three day, All Mountain Course has being designed to give you those skills. The course will teach you all you need to know, to confidently take to the hills knowing that you won't get lost on a hill side, in the dark with a buckled wheel with no idea what to do.

Whilst riding and bike handling technique obviously play a major part, navigation, trail repairs and emergency procedure can be as equally important when riding out in the mountains. We'll spend a day looking at the fundamental riding techniques that go to make a good all round rider. Riding out in the hills on natural trails is often more difficult than tackling a trail centre. The actual riding may not be anymore technical but in the hills you've got to decide whether something is rideable or not ... and you've got to decide quickly! In this environment learning to anticipate and react to these quickly changing situations and without hesitation is the key to riding confidently and safely.

On day two we'll deal with navigation, trail side repairs and how to cope with emergency situations. A practical knowledge of all these things can mean the difference between an enjoyable epic ride in the mountains or a disaster that you'd much rather try to forget.

The last day is when everything comes together. We'll take a ride out into the hills, you'll get the chance to try out some of the things you've learned over the previous two days including the opportunity to navigate.

This part of Wales is one of the least populated in the entire country, it is described as the UK's last real wilderness outside of the Highlands ... it's quite possible to ride all day and not meet a single person.

As well as a tiny population, the area benefits from a very large network of bridleways, old drovers roads and various tracks and trails. Let us take you out into the hills, valleys and mountains so you can experience the fantastic riding for yourself. There's also a few 'secret' bits we'll take you to if you ask nicely. We know that there are as many different types of rider as there are bikes so we try to make our guiding as flexible as possible. Anything from a steady ride out into the hills on forest roads and bridleways to a 80-90k 2 day ride through the mountains with an overnight camp is possible.

You don't have to be super fit or a brilliant technical rider to benefit from our guiding service as we can tailor the route to suit any level of rider, the only thing we can't do is flatten the hills!

Mountain biking is still the UK's fastest growing outdoor activity. It's no surprise when you consider the health benefits, social aspect and the fact that mountain biking is fantastic fun.

Forest Freeride taster days are designed for people with no previous off road riding experience but who would like to give mountain biking a try. With our expert tuition and purpose built skills areas, you might be surprised by just how far you can progress in a day. We'll supply bike and helmet, all you'll need to bring is your lunch. Taster days are run all year round, after all it's mountain biking and you can't let a little rain put you off.

During the morning we'll run through the basic riding skills required to get you riding safely. We'll cover various aspects including:

Your position on the bike and its effect.
Braking and controlling speed.
Cornering basics.
Dealing with rough terrain.

After a lunch break, we'll head off into the forest where you'll get to sample some real mountain biking and try out your new skills. We won't be riding miles, so don't worry if your fitness isn't quite what it could be.

Ride out - Bivvy out gives you a fantastic opportunity to sample the wild riding of the Cambrian mountains but with the added bonus of a night under the stars ... a true 24 hour adventure. Riding out and staying out really does add a new element to mountain biking, allowing you to ride further into the wilds without worrying about getting back before dark.

We'll set off around midday on day one and return mid afternoon the following day, spending the night high up in the hills. Combining riding with bivvying is something which is steadily gaining in popularity. However, not everyone is blessed with an ideal location or perhaps they don't have the equipment or the knowledge to go it alone ... that's where we come in. We'll supply you with a bivvy bag for the trip, so the only extras you'll need above what you'd usually carry are a sleeping bag, a little more food and a sense of adventure.

This year we're also running Girls Only Bivvy trips for women who fancy something a little on the wild side :-)

The Forest Freeride Summer School gives you all the reasons to ride your bike; a full five days devoted to all things mountain bike.

We'll take you on a variety of wilderness rides into the Cambrian Mountains, deliver numerous skills coaching sessions plus a day out to one of Wales' superb trail centres. By the end of the week, you will have had the opportunity to become faster, safer and more confident on your bike.

Wilderness Rides
Experience the bridleways and tracks of mid Wales and the Cambrian Mountains. Hidden valleys, vast forests and high mountain plateaus are all waiting to be explored and with our local knowledge of the area, you won't miss any of the really good bits.

Skills Sessions
Everyone can benefit from some coaching. Perhaps you cornering technique could use a little help or do drops make you freeze up and brake? Throughout the week we'll look at all aspects of riding both on-site here and out in the hills. The total sum of coaching over the week will be equivalent to a two day skills course.

Trail Centre Day
For many riders a trip to Wales would not be complete without riding at one of the World famous trail centres. Both Coed y Brenin and Nant yr Arian are a 40 minute drive away so you will get the chance to sample some of the best man-made trails available and cake in the café too!

For the duration of the Summer School you can choose to stay in our bunkhouse for free (we ask that you put a donation of £20 per person into the Wales Air Ambulance charity box) or if you prefer to source some other accommodation, there are several choices of campsites, self catering, hotels and B&B in the area.
